Course Offerings – Adults

Our adult courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). If you are unsure which level fits you, the CEFR levels are explained here.

You can also take a free placement test at Hueber. Our teachers will then advise you and invite you to a trial lesson.

German for Adults 1: Beginner · CEFR A1

This course is for adults with little or no prior experience, as well as heritage learners who want to formalize their “kitchen German.” We focus on the essential mechanics of the language and get students communicating in German from the start.

Materials: Schritte International Neu / Deutsch Heute (Einführung–Chapter 3).

Communication: Introducing oneself, handling basic social interactions, describing one’s immediate surroundings, and asking and answering the “five W” questions (Wer, Was macht, Wann, Wie, Wo).

Grammar: The present tense, the logic of German word order, and the nominative and accusative cases.

German for Adults 2: Intermediate · CEFR A2

The second course in our adult sequence goes deeper into the structure of the language and begins adding nuance to students’ communication. We bridge the gap between simple sentences and real-world functionality. This is often the stage where the logic of German starts to click, so we focus on the practical reasons behind the grammar.

Materials: Schritte International Neu / Deutsch Heute (Chapters 4–7).

Communication: Scheduling appointments, shopping, describing daily routines, and beginning to talk about things that have already happened.

Grammar: Modal verbs (can, must, want), the dative case, subordinate clauses (weil, dass, wenn), and the conversational past (Perfekt).

German for Adults 3: Advanced · CEFR B1.1

In the third course, learners move from surviving to thriving in German. We turn to more complex sentence structures that let students express opinions, make comparisons, and connect ideas smoothly, building toward a comprehensive overview of German grammar.

Materials: Schritte International Neu 4–5.

Communication: Expressing personal opinions, discussing health and well-being, narrating more complex events, and recognizing cultural nuance in German media and literature.

Grammar: Subordinate clauses (weil, dass, wenn), comparative and superlative forms, reflexive verbs, the narrative past (Präteritum), and the subjunctive (Konjunktiv II).

German for Adults 4: Proficiency · CEFR B1.2 and higher

Our most advanced course shifts away from the textbook toward real-world materials such as advertisements, menus, and newspaper and magazine articles. Students learn to talk about personal experiences as well as German history and contemporary issues.

Materials: Schritte International Neu 6, with additional materials.

Communication: Discussing personal experiences and current topics, understanding radio reports, expressing oneself in an online forum, and taking a position.

Grammar: Two-part connectors (weder … noch), Futur I and II, the passive voice, the present participle, and adjective declension.

Through guided discussion, vocabulary building, and support from the instructor, students grow in speaking confidence, listening comprehension, and cultural understanding.

For: Adult learners who enjoy reading and conversation.

Recommended level: Intermediate to advanced (CEFR A2/B1 and above).
