Songs, stories, games, and crafts help children develop early listening and speaking skills as they explore new words and phrases. The goal is a joyful first experience of the language and culture that builds curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning from the very beginning.

Focus: Listening and speaking through play; first German words and everyday phrases.

Schmetterling · Ages 5–6

This class welcomes children who are new to German as well as those continuing to build on existing skills. Students explore familiar themes such as home, food, animals, and holidays, working on vocabulary suited to each child’s level. We move, sing, draw, and play games to bring new words to life, and in the later part of the class we begin reading and writing. Children also take part in school celebrations and small performances as part of the German School community. The class is designed as a two-year program.

Materials: Hans Hase / Meine Freunde und ich (current).

Focus: Everyday vocabulary and pronunciation, with reading and writing introduced later in the year.

Elementary I · Grades 1–3

Elementary I makes German feel natural and approachable for early learners who are still developing their reading and writing. Lessons center on active engagement through songs, games, and stories, introducing foundational vocabulary in a supportive, low-pressure environment where students find their voice in German. The class begins with students entering 1st grade.

Materials: Deutschprofis (current).

Focus: Foundational vocabulary and speaking, with reading and writing emerging.

Elementary II · Grades 4–5

Elementary II is designed for students who have gained more independence in reading and writing. We continue to use games and stories to keep the classroom engaging while introducing more complex sentence structures and grammar in a clear, manageable way. Students move beyond single words to express their own thoughts with growing confidence.

Materials: Deutschprofis (current).

Focus: More complex sentences and grammar; expressing one’s own ideas.

Course Offerings – Children German for our youngest learners, from first words through growing independence in reading and writing.
